A limited edition varietal grown on the only Barbarossa hectare (one of four in the world planted in 1978) in Southern Africa – the grape is rare enough in its hypothesised homeland of Liguria in Italy. Minimal water was administered to the vines during growth to maintain sustainable quality in the wine which produced a vintage which is remarkably lighter in taste.
The 2021 Barbarossa was made in true Amarone style – half of the crop was left on the vines to dry to gain maximum flavour and the other half was picked and sorted to dry through further ventilation for at least ten months. After drying, the grapes were pressed and fermented where a slow fermentation process took place under veil. After the fermentation, we moved the wine to old French oak barrels to mature for a further 10-12 months.
Aromas of red fruit, chocolate and spices including black cherry liqueur, plum sauce, black figs, carob and cinnamon. A velvety smooth finish with subtle notes of green peppercorn and crushed gravel dust.
