Kilchoman Sanaig
The west coast of Islay, from Portnahaven to Sanaigmore, is regularly battered by strong Atlantic storms. The high winds and rough seas have carved into the coastline to dramatic effect, creating a rugged beauty mirrored in the whisky after-which it was named.
Sanaig is a rocky inlet just north of the distillery and is the name given to their predominantly sherry cask influenced core expression, a vatting of 70% oloroso sherry casks and 30% bourbon barrels.
Kilchoman was the first distillery to be built on Islay for over 124 years and remains Islay’s only independent, family run distillery. Kilchoman is Islay’s Farm Distillery, the only distillery in Scotland to distil whisky from barley grown and malted on site.
Nose: Soft-cooked fruits with caramel and vanilla. Fragrant heather, raisins, pear, and orange peel with waves of stoned fruits, mixed spices, and rich peat smoke.
Palate: Toffee, peat smoke, and citrus with lingering sweetness. Over ripe plums, red cherries and hints of citrus give way to rich barbeque peat smoke, toffee, oak, and dark chocolate
Finish: A lovely balance of peat smoke, fruit, and sweetness. Mouth-coating mixed fruit, caramel, cinnamon, and clove with layers of brown sugar, spices, peat smoke and lasting sweetness.
