A range of ‘escaped braai wines”, wines which allow us to push the boundaries a fair bit, try new things in the cellar and work with grapes that might not make the headlines, but most importantly interesting ‘everyday luxury” drinking wines to share with friends, family & perhaps a random passer-by. Always hand crafted in small quantities.
Gnarled old bush vines with views of False Bay on
Helderzicht farm were hand harvested at dawn, crushed into lagar for a gentle cool weeklong ferment with manual pigeage prior to pressing to old large format French oak for MLF. Post-ferment racked into 500L old French oak for 26 months of barrel tempering, barrel selection made & racked into tank for six months to settle, prior to bottling unfined, unfiltered. Only yeast and sulphur were used during vinification.
Almost pitch-black elixir with heady black hedgerow berry, All-spice, orange rind & purple fruit aromatics – segueing to buxom bramble, crushed cocoa nib, fynbos, sweet purple plum & flirtations of All-spice on the palate, wrapped in chalky tannin ‘n savoury
meaty Umami undertone on the finish. Bold, yet rustically finessed.
Ideal for hearty rustic farm fare & tempestuous weather – rack of lamb ‘n all the trimmings; grilled duck breasts, flambéed cranberry ‘n bramble compote on wilted greens; Côte de boeuf with fluffy duck fat chips & garden greens – or simply enjoy with
fine fromage & charcuterie and much merriment. Decant in youth or cellar for a good while. In warmer climes this wine can be lightly chilled.
