Name Inspiration:
Derived from the ancient Latin work of satirical fiction penned by Gaius Petronius during the early days of the Roman Empire, Satyricon unfolds a narrative of lust, love, and temptation—a deliberate quest for knowledge and wisdom, even at the expense of innocence. Embodying the essence of this timeless tale, our Sangiovese invites you on a journey of discovery and indulgence.
Climate:
Nestled within the newly established ward of Hemel – en - Aarde Ridge, just 10km from the Atlantic Ocean, our vineyards are blessed with a temperate maritime climate. Here, southerly winds sweep through the appellations during summer, ushering in regular sea mists and overcast conditions, ensuring balanced temperatures year-round. With an average summer temperature of 19°C and approximately 750mm of rainfall per year, our vineyards thrive under nature's gentle guidance.
Technical Details:
Hand-harvested in the serene embrace of cool early morning temperatures, our Sangiovese grapes undergo a meticulous journey of transformation. Following overnight cold storage, they are delicately destemmed and crushed into red ferment tanks, where cold maceration unfolds for three days. Fermentation proceeds under controlled temperatures until dryness is achieved, before the wine is gently pressed and transferred to a selection of seasoned French Oak Barriques for 14 months of aging and maturation. Final blending occurs one month before bottling, allowing the wine to evolve gracefully in the bottle before its eagerly anticipated release.
Styling:
Our Sangiovese embodies the vibrant essence of bright cherry fruit and savory spice character typical of this noble grape variety. The palate unfolds with a velvety smoothness, accented by delicate floral notes and an almost dusty finish, reminiscent of the sun-drenched landscapes of Italy. Ideal for pairing with classic Italian dishes such as baked aubergine, tomato-based pasta, and cured meats, this wine boasts moderate tannins and bright acidity, ensuring enjoyment upon release and promising graceful development over the next 2-5 years.
